In addition to the thermal energy produced from woody biomass, since 2023, a part of the electricity used by E. Vigolungo Plywood has also been produced on-site from renewable sources, thanks to a photovoltaic system installed on the production buildings roofs.
A photovoltaic system is an electrical system that captures sunlight and converts it into energy. It is possible to obtain this energy thanks to the photovoltaic effect, a physical phenomenon that allows sunlight to be directly converted into electricity.
Light is captured by the panels. The photons strike the surface of the solar cells, transferring their energy to the electrons present. Once charged, the electrons flow into the circuit, generating electrical energy. During this phase, the energy produced is direct current (DC), and so, it is not directly usable to power devices and machinery. Through an inverter, the energy generated by the panels is converted into alternating current (AC), which can meet the energy needed by houses or industries.
Choosing an industrial photovoltaic system brings significant benefits to both the company implementing it and the environment.
The system has benn installed on a surface wich is exposed to sunlight, covering the two production warehouses. The photovoltaic system, with a peak power of 1,069 kW, consists of 2,324 modules of 460 W each, and effectively uses the available space and constant exposure to sunlight
The system is expected to produce approximately 1,043 MWh/year, of which 94% is directly used on-site as self-consumption, meeting 12% of the total electricity needs.
Thanks to this system, 357 tons/year (coefficient used: 0.343 t_CO2/MWh) of CO2 emissions will be avoided.
Thanks to the energy produced on-site through the solar panels, we can ensure significant savings. Since its installation, calculations and estimates have been made regarding the system’s impact. Here are the key figures.
